Navionics SonarCharts™ Live - New!
2014 Nov 08
Countries around the world, outside of Northern America, will be all too familiar with the lack of data when it comes to Inland Waters such as dams, lakes and estuaries, some more than others. Navionics has made big advances in changing this situation as can be seen in the four screenshots below of my local dam (Inanda) here in Kwa-Zulu Natal South Africa, showing the progress of just this year alone:
a. Jan 2014 - Nothing
b. Jul 2014 - Outlines for most of the popular dams
c. Sep 2014 - SonarCharts™ (social mapping via sonar log updates)
d. Nov 2014 - SonarCharts™ Live (create charts while you drive on the water)
Taking a closer look at these charts, one will very quickly notice that just 2 - 3 quick passes from the dam wall to the river produces a very rough depth contour chart (see below). Social mapping (SonarCharts™) will produce very detailed charts eventually, but this is going to take time.
This is why SonarCharts™ Live is such a revelation, there is no upload/process/download time required. Using Vexilar's SonarPhone T-Box SP200, the Navionics Boating App and your iPhone or iPad you can have live mapping right there on the water. This is a very powerful fishing tool that is extremely affordable for all boaters, from kayaks to big centre consoles. With just 15 minutes of driving in a zig-zag pattern at an average speed of 13.7kph this offshore hump was discoved in an area you would least expect it - and it was loaded with fish!
If your transducer is not set correctly, you will end up with a complete mess like this ...
