Waypoint Management - Removing Repeated Waypoints
2014 Jul 24
Repeated waypoints are the single biggest culprit when it comes to slowing Lowrance units down. If you are either networked to other units or you are regularly backing your data up, as you should be, you might find this information helpful.
First check if your chart plotter has repeated waypoints.
Go to a waypoint you know you have had for quite some time, in my case I am looking at the rock icon wpt# 863.
***IMPORTANT*** Make sure you are zoomed in close.
All looks as it should until I place the cursor over the rock icon, under info it says ‘4 items’. This means that it has been repeated 4 times.
Go to Files in your utilities page and select ‘WaypointsRoutesTrails’. Take note of the number of waypoints (2263) as well as the ‘Deleted Waypoints’ number (4161), this is like your unit’s Recycle Bin.
Save the waypoints by Exporting as Version 3, I repeat – version THREE. Version three will still remember your fancy HDS icons and not just the old LCX and LMS type icons.
***IMPORTANT*** Make a backup file of your waypoints first before you continue, and remove both Ethernet and N2k network cables.
Now save to an SD memory card with a name you will remember, maybe even throw in a date.
Go to GPS Utility - Home and download their latest version of GPS Utilities. You can use it free of charge but the number of waypoints are limited. The full registration is $60 – worth every cent!
Once loaded to your computer, go to ‘Options’ and select ‘General’. From the menu select the ‘Open/Import files’ tab and make these two changes to the ‘Waypoints’ section.
Now open the .usr file you exported from your chart plotter and the first thing you will notice is that the 2263 waypoints are now only 714. The software cleaned those waypoints up for you.
Save the file as a Lowrance .usr file to your SD card. It will automatically be saved as version 3, even if you saved as version 5 originally.
Before you import the cleaned file, remember to DELTE ALL WAYPOINTS from your chart plotter. 8
You will notice that your ‘Deleted Waypoints’ folder on your chart plotter is still holding waypoints, these waypoints MUST BE PURGED as well before you continue.
Import the new cleaned file to your chart plotter.
Your WaypointsRoutesTrails folder should now be spotless.
And your chart should now only show ‘1 Item’ for each waypoint.
Your charts will work better, your sonar scroll speed will be improved and your general menu navigation should be restored to its original speed.
BEFORE reconnecting to the network, DELETE AND PURGE all data from the other units. If you do not do this, all that old duplicated data will simply be loaded straight back on to the unit you just cleaned.
